Weight Loss Scams Revealed

Wouldn’t it be nice to lose weight quickly, with minimal effort or fuss? Of cause you would! I for one would love to just sit back do nothing and the weight will just fall off.

Whether it’s a Low Carb, Low GI Diet, A choice of diet pills or “natural” weight loss pills, diet shakes, or exercise equipment, we’ve all seen the fantastic claims people including celebrities make about losing tons of weight AND how they can show you how to do the same thing.

I can tell you right now that 99% of these people are total frauds. You may have even fallen prey to one of these scam artists, selling you their latest “weight loss” program. Me too!

In the past I’ve brought so many of these programs that I can’t even recall how many. I don’t know why, but I tend to find the “good” in people, and I was “sold” by these marketing schemes time and time again, even after being scammed by another. Finally, after so many disappointments, I got FED UP. I decided to get to the bottom of this fascination we have with Weight Loss Programs and find out if there really were any LEGITIMATE programs for Weight Loss.

Legitimate as in not only dealing with LOSING WEIGHT but also what caused the Weight Gain in the first place.

The American Heart Association has several tips to that helps guide you to identify a Fad Diet or Program if it is recommended.

• Magic or miracle foods that burn fat. Foods don’t burn fat – they create fat when we eat more than we need.

• Bizarre quantities of only one food or type of food such as eating only cabbage or tomatoes. These foods are fine as part of an overall healthy diet, but eating large quantities of them could lead to unpleasant side effects.

• Rigid Menus. Many diets set out a very limited selection of foods to be eaten at a specific time and day, exactly as written. Often these limited diets don’t address the widely varied taste preferences of our diverse population.

• Specific food combinations. Some foods taste good together, like the classic “soup and sandwich,” but there’s no scientific evidence that eating foods in certain sequences or combinations has any medical benefit.

• Rapid weight loss of more than two pounds a week.

• No warning given to people with diabetes or high blood pressure to seek advice from the physician or healthcare provider. Some fad diets could raise blood pressure or blood glucose even if you loss weight.

• No increase physical activity. Simple physical activities, like walking or riding a bike, are one of the most important ways to lose weight and maintain weight loss. Yet many “fad” diets don’t emphasis these easy changes.

Now don’t be discouraged, which weight loss program is the right one for you, which one isn’t just a fad diet. In my research I have found a few programs that not only deal with losing weight but also the cause of why you got fat in the first place (which by the way, is ultimately the main reason why we end up putting the weight back on) and also adding in successful, simple strategies to increase exercising.

Whatever you do, I wish you a healthy year for you and your’s

For those whose weight puts them at a very high health risk, there are surgical options available to help. Weight loss surgery is very serious– there are a variety of risks involved, and for that reason it is only performed after extensive consultation with your doctor. There are several common weight loss surgery methods, but they all work in one of two ways: by restricting the amount of food you eat, by limiting the absorption of calories, or both. There are many specific procedures used, and we will discuss a few of them below.

Restrictive Procedure: Vertical Banded Gastroplasty

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, or VBG is a procedure that simply restricts the amount of food the patient can eat. With a VBG, the part of the stomach near the esophagus is vertically stapled about 2.5 inches. This creates a smaller pouch for the stomach. In addition, the outlet from the stomach is restricted by a band, which makes food leave the stomach more slowly, helping you to feel fuller, longer.

VBG surgery is effective, and studies show that patients can maintain about 50% of their target weight loss after ten years. Another benefit is that it allows you to absorb nutrients normally. However, the procedure itself does not guarantee results, as it’s easy to over eat and stretch the stomach pouch, or rupture the staples. In the end, about 40% of VBG patients lose less than half their desired weight.

Malabsorptive Procedure: Biliopancreatic Diversion

This procedure, commonly known as BPD, is more common in Europe than in the US. It allows food to be poorly digested and absorbed into the body. With this procedure, a full two-thirds of the stomach is removed, leaving a stomach of about two to three cups in volume. This remaining stomach is connected to a part of the small intestine, bypassing a large portion of the digestive tract. This causes the enzymes and bile needed for proper digestion to meet with food later down in the digestive tract, giving it less time to digest and absorb into the body before reaching the large intestine.

Combined Procedure: Gastric Bypass Roux-en-Y

The Gastric Bypass Roux-en-Y is the most popular weight loss surgery procedure in the United States, and it works by both restricting the amount of food ingested, as well as inhibiting the absorption of calories and nutrients. The procedure is performed by creating a stomach pouch as with the VBG, and then connecting the stomach pouch with a Y-shaped part of the intestine, called the Roux limb. This allows food to bypass the first two sections of the small intestine. The weight loss surgery procedure is adjustable from patient to patient, as the length left of either section of intestine can be increased or decreased to allow for more or less calorie absorption.

All of the weight loss surgery procedures outlined here have their pros and their cons. Some, like the Gastric Bypass Roux-en-Y, can result in loss of 60-80% of excess weight within two years. Others work more slowly, and have a higher instance of weight gain.

And all have their risks. Any Malabsorptive procedure will be accompanied by a strict nutrient and eating program that must be followed religiously to avoid developing serious health problems, making weight loss surgery a lifelong choice, not a one-time event. Also, each of these procedures can develop potentially fatal complications, making it very important not to decide on weight loss surgery lightly. While it IS effective for most people, it’s important to sit down and have a long discussion with your doctor about your risks and options.

SOME people think that skipping meals is the easiest and fastest way to lose weight. The truth is skipping meals is a sure-fire way to gain weight, not promote weight loss.

This is what happens when people skip their meals:

1) Skipping Meals Slows The Body’s Metabolism

The body is wired to provide the body with fuel or energy throughout the day by burning calories from the food we eat and converting them as glucose. Skipping meals decreases the body’s metabolic rate , the speed at which calories and fat are burnt. Weight loss slows.

The body, in anticipation of further fuel deprivation, automatically goes into a false state of starvation and holds on fiercely to the fats in our body. It looks for fuel it needs from the stored reserves, glycogen in the muscle or liver.

When the body utilizes glycogen for fuel, you are actually losing water instead of fat – which is not what you want. This is because for every one gram of carbohydrate (in the form of glycogen) stored in the muscle or liver, four grams of water are also bound.

Any rapid weight loss as a result of skipping some meals is temporary as the weight loss is mostly water.

As soon as normal eating resumes, the body seeks to replenish its glycogen reserves with the necessary amount of water. The body naturally regains the weight it lost earlier.

2) Skipping Meals Puts The Body Into State Of Hunger

Skipping meals makes you hungry, so you are likely to overeat at the next meal. When you skip a meal, you increase the interval between meals so when you do eat say, after four to six hours, there is a tendency to binge.

Worse, to fend off the sharp hunger pangs, one may turn to snacking on high calorie or high fat foods for instant energy boost. Our blood sugars go on a roller coaster ride as high carb and high fat snacks are quickly digested by the body. What follows is more cravings and more over eating to stop the hunger.

For effective weight loss, the right eating habit is NOT skipping meals but eating more frequent and smaller meals throughout the day. The body gets accustomed to burning calories every two to three hours, digesting the food we eat rather than storing fat and burning muscle for energy.

Eating the right foods – not skipping meals is the solution to permanent weight loss.

Heart Rate Weight Loss Relationship

Tracy Ma asked:

There are numerous debates and viewpoints on the relationship between a person’s heart rate and weight loss. It is important to recognize that heart rate & weight loss DOES have a direct relationship with each other. Read on to find out.

Under normal circumstances, if your body’s energy output is greater than your body’s energy input, then you will lose weight as your body needs to burn fat in order to function properly. Therefore even if you do not exercise, you can lose weight. Almost all of us can acknowledge that exercise leads to weight loss as energy is being spent during the exercise, so long as you do not gorge on a feast afterwards.

Now, during exercise workout your heart rate increases, and it is directly affected by the intensity of that workout. It is important to realize that unlike a delta function (going from zero to non-zero instantaneously), your heart rate increases AND decreases gradually. The result of your heart rate changing is that:

metabolism increases blood flow increases

Both of these body functions are vital, and require energy from your body. It is from these two body functions that your body consumes more energy, and burns more fat.

Some argue that heart rate does not affect weight loss because a person uses the same amount of energy walking 5 km in 1 hour, and running 5 km in 25 minutes, because the distance traveled is the same regardless of velocity. But this is not true; more energy is required for the person running the 5 km as his heart rate (thus blood flow) accelerates and decelerates faster. Because more energy is required (also take into account other factors such as the heat energy generated by the body through the intensity of the run), more fat is burned for this energy, thus more weight is lost.

Weight Loss Decisions – Get Help – Review A List Of Weight Loss Programs

Sam Filter asked:

There are many fad diet experts that say losing weight is simple. That is just not true. So many weight loss programs have you making changes in your lifestyle, your diet, exercise, and supplements that it can leave your head in a spin. We all know that if we burn more calories then we consume we will obviously lose weight. That in itself sounds simple but if you are like me it is way to easy to give in to high calorie temptations.

One way to find options to help your individual needs is to review a list of weight loss programs and find one with the options that will best suit you. Many weight loss programs can be personalized to fit your individual tastes and lifestyle. If you can find a program that appeals to you it is much more likely that you will stick with it. If you are like me and want to get started with small changes right away here are a few options for you.

Get smaller plates! Using a smaller plate will help you cut down on portion size without having to think too much about it. Subconsciously if you place a smaller amount of food on a large plate you think that you aren’t getting enough. But if you put that same amount of food on a smaller plate your eyes see more food even if it is not there. Take smaller bites and then eat your food slowly taking a few sips of water between every few bites or so.

The object is to first trick your brain into thinking that you are eating more and second to allow your body time to feel full. This may seem small and silly but it can really make a difference and don’t underestimate the power of small steps, sometimes small steps can make the biggest differences.

Another thing you can do for yourself right away is to improve the quality of the food you eat. Eating foods like the ones from fast food restaurants will have the exact opposite affect of your weight loss goals. And that also goes for processed and packaged foods; they will pack in more calories and this will be detrimental to your weight loss goals.

You need to be very careful even with processed foods that claim to be low fat; often times when they take out the fat they add calories in other ways to improve the flavor. This way they can still advertise low fat, sneaky huh! Whenever you buy food items that are packaged and processed read the labels carefully.

By doing these simple things you can start on your way to your weight loss goals and keep searching for list of weight loss programs that might be helpful to you. When you find weight loss program that you are interested find out if there is a support group or forum that you can join. It is proven that when people have the support of others they are much more likely to lose the weight and keep it off.

For kids who are overweight who need weight loss tips there are a few key things to keep in mind. Never confront them in a standoffish way and never make them feel poorly about their bodies. It is important to remember you are dealing with children and need to approach the situation carefully. Explain to them they are unhealthy just like many adults can be and they need to change a few things in their lives to live healthier and happier. Explain they will feel much better in the future and will probably be much happier after observing healthier activities.

Some great tips to try out are making healthy foods look like not-so-healthy ones. Cut apples to look like French fries, make chips out of bananas, things like this can work wonders. Also healthier ideas in terms of food are using less oil and baking more foods for your children. Weight loss for kids can be difficult unless you try this mainly. Make sure you bake potatoes or French fries and other items that need to be cooked instead of frying them or microwaving.

Try to incorporate more vegetables and produce into your children’s diets. If they enjoy pizza try putting vegetables on top of it and less meat and other unhealthy toppings. There are many things that can be considered weight loss tips for kids but these are some of the first and foremost ones to observe. If you really wish to help your children on their road to success losing weight it will require quite a bit more, but this should get you started!

Best Weight Loss Foods – Eat Real Food Your Body Craves

Scott Dell asked:

Ok, admit it, you want to lose weight but you are afraid that you will need to change the way you eat will be impossible.  You are probably thinking you need to live off carrot sticks and celery as the best weight loss foods.

What if I told you that you could still eat the foods that still make you feel like a human?  Foods that make you feel full and not getting hunger pains half an hour after eating.  It is true, in fact you may not even stray that far from what you are currently eating.  But the following will show you the best weight loss foods.

The way to do this is by eating smarter.  Avoid all those empty calories.  Learn to eat 6 times during the day.  Three meals and three snacks.  You are probably asking why are you telling me to eat more in frequency, I am trying to lose weight.  Well, for starters, starving does not work.  The only thing you accomplish is getting rid of water weight and teaching your body to function on lower caloric intakes.  In turn this lowers your metabolism.  Your metabolism is the key to burning fat.  By eating with this much frequency you are making your body work at digesting food and also burning calories at the same time.

So what are some of these best weight loss foods?  Well for breakfast you can have whole grain bread, fruit, eggs, yogurt, oatmeal or whole grain cereals.  A mid morning snack can be a smoothie, some nuts piece of fruit or peanut butter on celery. An afternoon snack can consist of some more nuts and some fruit, yogurt and berries.  For dinner try any type of lean meat or fish.  The lean meat can be red or white.  Obviously use common sense, don’t make a meal that includes a rich sauce or anything fried.  Add to dinner with some green vegetables and whole grain rice.  For an evening snack, have your favorite ice cream, as long as it is low fat.

Those are just a few examples you would be amazed at how much real food you can eat while dieting.  I have found a website that you can find much more in depth information regarding ways to eat healthier and lose weight.  I suggest you visit it now.

Weight Loss – Take Control With Portion Sizes

May 23, 2009 by Admin · Leave a Comment

Julia Denham asked:

Losing weight doesn’t have to be complex. In fact, the easiest way to lose weight without dieting and without fuss is to take control of your portion sizes. We’re all used to super-sized portions because of the huge amounts of food we’re served when we eat out.

Retrain yourself. Slimming down your portions slims you down as well. Start by recognizing what healthy portion sizes look like. You may be surprised that a healthy portion size, although much smaller that the portions you’re used to eating, satisfy you and make you feel full.

At-A-Glance Portion Control – Retrain Your Eyes

You can train yourself to judge healthy portions over time. This is important, because once you know what a “serving” is, then you know how much you should be eating. For example, a serving of a steak is the size of the palm of your hand, and a baked potato to go with that steak is the size of a bar of soap.

When you eat out, ask for the entree menu, and order from that. If you choose to order from the standard dinner menu, then ask that half your plate be packed up so you can take it home with you. The restaurant won’t mind, their goal is that you enjoy your food and that you return to eat there again.

When you’re eating at home, use a smaller plate for dinner, and start the meal with vegetable soup. If you make the soup yourself, from vegetable stock, a can of chopped tomatoes and a selection of sliced vegetables (simmer for half an hour to cook) it will not only fill you up, but add vitamins and minerals to your diet too.

Since your vegetable soup and a salad fill you up, you’ll find that you won’t notice that you’re eating smaller portions of steak. Within a week or two, you will have retrained yourself so that the smaller, healthier portions now look “normal” to you – you won’t want larger portions.

Taking control of your portion sizes sounds complex, but it doesn’t need to be. Just think to yourself: half of restaurant portions, and you’ll soon be able to judge the right portions for you to help you to lose weight and to keep it off.
